Place: UQAM Sports Center ( 1212 Rue Sanguinet, Montréal, QC H2X 3E7 )

PRACTICE: We’ll have at least 300 tatamis set up in the triple gymnasium of the UQAM Sports Center. All the hotels we suggest (below) are within a 15-minute walk of where we’ll be practicing. All these hotels are within a minute’s walk of each other.

Introduction

Welcome to the Aikido Summer Camp in Montreal, organized by Aikido de la Montagne! We’re excited to have you join us for an unforgettable week of Aikido and Iaido practice, city exploration and good food sharing with the community. This guide will help you navigate the city, discover amazing places to eat, and enjoy the vibrant festivals that Montreal has to offer.

This document is designed to provide you with all the information you need to make the most of your time at the camp and in Montreal. From transportation tips to dining recommendations and festival highlights, you’ll find everything you need right here. Our goal is to ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable experience for the summer camp and your time in Montreal.

A secure internet connection (wifi) offered by UQAM University will be provided to you if you need it. The QR code will be available on the registration table.

Logistics at UQAM Sports Center

If you do not have a padlock for the locker you can rent it at reception for $1.

The UQAM sports center will provide you with a free towel if you need one.

Water bottles are free, please identify yours and use it for the whole day. You can use the bottle filling stations to refill it. (Please empty and dispose of empty bottles in the recycling bins).

For those who drive to the UQAM Sports Centre, there are several parking options available:

Public Transportation Guide

Montreal’s public transit system, operated by the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), is extensive and reliable. The system includes buses and a metro (subway) network that makes it easy to get around the city.

Ticket Information:

There are two formats of tickets: disposable paper Occasional card and rechargeable smart OPUS card. All cards will allow you to get around by train, metro or bus. For occasional travelers, the Occasional card might be a better option for you. You can purchase them at metro stations (at fare vending machines or from station agents). Single tickets, day passes, and weekly passes are available.

  • How to Read Bus Schedules:
    Bus schedules are posted at bus stops and available online. They indicate the times buses are expected to arrive at each stop along their routes.
  • Major Bus Routes:
    Key routes to UQAM Sports Centre include 30,Saint-Denis / Saint-Hubert; 361,Saint-Denis; 427,Express Saint-Joseph; 715,Est; 747,Ouest; 150,René-Lévesque; 350,Verdun / LaSalle; 355,Pie-IX; 358,Sainte-Catherine; 364,Sherbrooke / Joseph-Renaud; 410,Express Notre-Dame; 430,Express Pointe-aux-Trembles; 445,Express Papineau; 15,Est.
  • Tips for Using the Bus System:
    Use the Chrono app or Google Maps for real-time bus tracking and route planning.

Metro System:

  • Overview of Metro Lines:
    Montreal’s metro has four lines: Green, Orange, Yellow, and Blue. Each line connects various parts of the city, with major transfer points at Lionel-Groulx and Berri-UQAM.
  • Closest metro stations:
    Champ-de-Mars (Orange line – 6 min walk), Berri-UQAM (Central station of Green, Orange and Yellow lines – 6 min walk), Saint Laurent (Green line – 8 min walk).
  • How to Navigate Metro Stations:
    Look for signs indicating the direction of travel and the line color. Maps are available in stations and on trains.
  • Tips for Using the Metro:
    Metro service typically runs from 5:30 AM to 1:00 AM (1:30 AM on weekends). Avoid rush hours (7:00-9:00 AM and 4:00-6:00 PM) for a more comfortable ride.

  • Fare Options and Prices:
    • Single ride: $3.75
    • Day pass: $11
    • Weekly pass: $31.
  • How to Purchase Tickets and Passes:
    Purchase at metro station vending machines or station agents, authorized retailers, or online.
  • Special Discounts and Free Ride Days:
    Special discounts are available for students and seniors.

Daily Happy Hour 6pm – 9pm @ Aikido de la Montagne

From July 20 to 26, during the camp, there will be a daily happy hour at the ADLM dojo. It’s a place for summer camp visitors to get to know each other in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Alcoholic (wine and beer), non-alcoholic (juice, sparkling, coke, 7-up) and snack foods will be available. Tickets for these drinks are on sale at the UQAM registration table for $5 (beer and wine) and $3 (non-alcohol drinks).

Please note that no tickets will be sold at the dojo.

Montreal is a very busy city in summer, and hotel rooms go fast as the summer season approaches. Please note, that it is only with the Delta Hotel that we have a block of rooms reserved, in our name, with a guaranteed price until June 13, 2024. The closer we get to the summer season, the more likely it is that prices at other hotels will rise. For this reason, we invite you to book your hotel room as soon as possible. You can always cancel your reservation, free of charge, if you follow the hotel’s instructions.
